Established in 1977, Goolsby Mortuary is a family-owned and operated business located in Historic Southeast Atlanta, Georgia. The founder, Thomas D. Goolsby Jr., an Atlanta native and Washington High School graduate, began his journey in the funeral service industry after obtaining his funeral service provider license in 1966. His passion for quality service and a strong sense of compassion led to the creation of Goolsby Mortuary, which has become a trusted name in providing compassionate and professional funeral services at reasonable prices.
Goolsby Mortuary views its work as a ministry of service and compassion, dedicated to supporting families in their times of sorrow. The firm emphasizes the importance of providing not only logistical assistance but also emotional support to those in need, embodying the values of empathy and care that are central to their faith-based mission. Committed to lessening the burden of end-of-life event planning, Goolsby Mortuary integrates technology to streamline the planning process, reducing the pressures associated with organizing such tasks. This allows families to focus on what matters most during this transitional period.
Lillie Goolsby, Thomas' wife, played a vital role in the success of the mortuary. An Atlanta native and alumna of Clark College, Lillie served as the Lady Attendant, offering care and understanding to families during their times of need, further emphasizing the firm's commitment to compassionate service.
Thomas' son, Michael B. Goolsby Sr., later took over the operations of the family business. An Atlanta local, Michael holds degrees from Clark Atlanta University and Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service.
His wife, Marie Ann Watson-Goolsby, an alumna of Morris Brown College and also a graduate of Gupton-Jones, serves as the funeral director in charge and CEO, making significant contributions to the firm and the funeral industry. She currently holds the position of State Director of Education and Research for the Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association, Inc., and is an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
The transition of Thomas, Lillie, and Michael has served as a bridge, facilitating the transfer of leadership to the next generation, with Marie as a cornerstone and a wellspring of knowledge and wisdom. The family's commitment to service continues with Gekelia and Erica, the
granddaughters of Thomas and Lillie, who are currently studying at Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service. Together, they are honored to follow in their family's footsteps and are wholeheartedly dedicated to upholding the tradition of delivering quality funeral services rooted in compassion and care.
Over 44 years, Goolsby Mortuary has remained a beacon of trust and dedication, exemplifying a faith-based approach to serving families during one of their most challenging times. Through their ministry of service and compassion, they strive to offer hope and support, ensuring that every family's needs are met with respect and dignity.
