Atlanta, Georgia
Born on August 19, 1922, in Atlanta (Thomasville Community), Georgia, to Lillian R. Page and Fred Ashley, Freddie Mae exemplified kindness, grace, and compassion throughout her long and fulfilling life.
Until her final days, she maintained her love for beauty, her deep appreciation for family and friends, and a spirit of gratitude for her many wonderful and varied experiences.
Freddie Mae spent her early years with her maternal grandparents, Eliza (Momma) and Stella (Poppa) Page, where she felt deeply loved and supported. Although she was an only child, she shared close relationships with her young aunts and uncles, who were raised alongside her.
Always dreaming of a loving family of her own, Freddie Mae married her soulmate, Albert Long. Together, they cherished 23 years of marriage and were blessed with one son and three daughters. Albert preceded her in death in 1971.
A phenomenal homemaker, Freddie Mae took pride in setting a “proper” table with her finest china, linens, and silver. Her talent as a seamstress ensured her children were neat, stylish, and well-dressed. Known for her delicious collard greens and pigtails, she could prepare them to perfection. She loved being a hostess, often inviting friends and neighbors for a warm meal, making everyone feel welcome. Freddie would love to say, "I'm going to party hearty" whenever she was celebrating an event.
Throughout her life, Freddie Mae cultivated and cherished friendships, forming bonds that lasted her entire lifetime—from neighbors and parents of her children’s friends to her crochet class (where she humorously didn’t make anything!) and her children’s friends.
She often expressed how blessed and grateful she was to have lived a long life filled with a loving family, good friends, and caring caregivers. Her life truly embodied the saying, “A Life Well Lived.”
Freddie Mae is survived by her daughter, Lillian (Wayne) Thornton; granddaughter, Tamika Ussery; grandsons: Alfred Ussery Jr., Isiah (Wakisha) Harvey III, Michael Harvey, and Christopher Long; great-granddaughters: Paige Ussery and Al’Layah Ussery; great-grandsons: Alfred Bridges Ussery, Isiah Harvey IV, Christopher (CJ) Thomas, Jr., Joshua Harvey, Zion Harvey-Pierre; and her great-great-grandson, Ace Bridges. She also leaves behind devoted cousins Valeicia Burke and Itonia Lord, her beloved “Prince,” bonus daughter DeKandis Ward, bonus sons Gilbert Wilkins, Daniel Fluellen, Isiah Harvey Jr., Anthony Waller, as well as other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Albert Long Sr.; son, Albert Long Jr.; and daughters, Beverly Harvey and Rosalyn Fluellen.
Freddie Mae’s legacy of love, grace, and warmth will forever be cherished by all who knew her.
