A Life of Faith and Love
God, in His infinite love, mercy, and grace, called our beloved sister, Mary, into eternal rest on October 20, 2026. Though our hearts are saddened and grieved by our loss, we rejoice in the beautiful memories she leaves behind and trust in the promises of God that we will see Mary again in our heavenly home.
Mary was the eldest of seven children, born on January 26, 1953, to Estoria Watts Spikes and Willie James “Bill” Spikes in McDonough, Georgia. She was born and raised in McDonough, where she accepted Christ as her Savior at a young age while attending Wesley Chapel Church.
Throughout her life's journey, Mary remained steadfast in her faith and trust in God.
Mary’s family later moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she completed her education and graduated from Fulton High School in 1971. She later met and married Simon Alexander Shuman. From their union, two children were born: Simon Antonio “Tony” Shuman and Tasha Demetrius Shuman.
A Life of Dedication and Hard Work
Mary was a dedicated and hardworking woman who began her working life at just 16 years old as a dietary aide at a nursing home. During her young adult years, she also worked at Crawford Long Hospital as a dietary aide.
Mary went on to build a career in the food service industry, working as a short-order cook at Zesto’s Restaurant forty years before retiring. She took great pride in her work, and her strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment earned her the respect of her coworkers and those she served.
Those She Leaves to Cherish Her Memory
Mary leaves behind a loving family who will forever treasure her memory, including her beloved son, Simon Antonio “Tony” Shuman (Nicole); her three beloved sisters, Linda, Sandra “Cookie” Lynn (Terry), and Brunette “Bonnie” Hunter (James); and her two beloved brothers, Eddie James Spikes and Walter Spikes.
She also leaves behind extended family, beloved brothers, cousins, and a host of nieces and nephews who will continue to cherish the memories they shared with her.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Tasha Shuman; her mother, Estoria Watts Spikes; her father, Willie James “Bill” Spikes; and her youngest brother, Harrison Spikes.
The Light and Joy She Leaves Behind
Mary’s light in our family will be deeply missed, yet it will forever shine brightly in our hearts.
Mary was truly the life of the party at all our family gatherings. She loved music, she loved to dance, and her presence brought positive energy, excitement, and joy to every occasion. She had a special way of making gatherings more enjoyable simply by being there.
Mary was engaging, warm, and friendly. She made everyone feel comfortable, welcome, and included. Her vibrant spirit and joyful personality naturally made her the heart of our family celebrations, creating precious memories that our family will cherish forever.
Though Mary is no longer with us in body, the love she shared, the joy she brought, and the light she radiated will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
“Even in our loss, we rejoice in the beautiful memories she leaves behind and find comfort in the love and promises of God.”
